Spoofing: How to Stop This Scam Before It Starts

By Empower FCU

Spoofing is a deceptive tactic meant to trick you into thinking a scammer is someone you know or trust. It often involves manipulating caller IDs, email addresses, or even social media profiles to appear legitimate.

Unfortunately, this fraud is on the rise. Scammers are becoming increasingly savvy in their attempts to gain access to your sensitive information.

But you can be savvy too.

What to Look Out For:

  • Unexpected communication: If you receive a random email, text, or phone call from someone claiming to be your credit union or service provider, be cautious.
  • Urgency and pressure tactics: Fraudsters often create a false sense of urgency (e.g., "Your account has been compromised. Act now!").
  • Suspicious links or attachments: Don't click on any links or download attachments from unfamiliar sources, even if they seem to be from a trusted contact.

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Verify before you act: Always double-check with the organization directly using verified contact information (for example, the number on the back of your card or on an official statement) before responding to any communication. Don’t rely on the contact details provided in the suspicious message.
  • Never share personal info: Empower FCU (and any legitimate institution) will never ask for your personal information, online banking details, or one-time passwords (OTP) out of the blue. If you're ever asked for this information unprompted, it's a red flag.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): Adding an extra layer of security to your accounts can prevent unauthorized access, even if a scammer has your log-in details.
  • Be cautious with sensitive info: Never share personal details like Social Security numbers, account numbers, or passwords over the phone or in response to unsolicited messages.
  • Educate yourself and others: Stay informed about the latest scam trends and share this knowledge with your friends and family.

By keeping vigilant and taking proactive steps, you can minimize the risk of falling victim to spoofing and protect your personal and financial information.

And if you suspect fraud, immediately contact Empower FCU.
