3 Smart Tips for Cyber Security Month

By Empower FCU

October is Cyber Security Month and we’re here to share strategies that can help keep you safe online. It’s an important consideration all year long, but especially important in the lead-up to the holidays (when cyber hacking and fraud abound).

Tip #1: Don’t create passwords. Create passphrases and use multi-factor authentication.

What's a passphrase? It’s a more secure way to safeguard your accounts. Use three or four unrelated, substantial words.

Examples: Swedish-horses-drink-soda and Seconds Ticking Become Orange

Avoid adding a number, exclamation point, or other form of punctuation at the end. That trick has become outdated and insecure. The key thing here is to make your passphrase memorable and make it yours.

Even better? Use the convenience of a reputable password manager to keep all your login information unique and protected.

Then, always enable the strongest multi-factor authentication (MFA) option available. An authenticator app is more secure than sending a code to your phone number or email, but any method is better than none.

Tip #2: Public WiFi – proceed with caution

Free WiFi is convenient, but it can be risky.

If you’re out and about and using WiFi, remember to:

  • Avoid logging into sensitive accounts (banking, work email, etc.) on public networks.
  • Use a reputable VPN service if you must connect. It provides an extra layer of security.
  • It may sound paranoid, but hear us out. Assume someone nearby is watching you. They’re probably not writing the next great novel.

Tip #3: Clean desk, clear mind, secure data

If you work out of the home, remember that a tidy workspace isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s a frontline defense against data leaks.

Make sure to:

  • Dispose of documents securely. Use a shredder or locked shred bins.
  • Don’t leave sensitive info unattended. Even in home offices, documents should be locked away when not in use.
  • Lock your laptop when you’re away from your desk. It’s a smart, secure habit.
  • Never leave your laptop or cell phone unattended or within view in a parked vehicle.
